Virgin pilots 200Mb broadband services

A small group of Kent residents are enjoying super quick Internet services as part of a new Virgin Media trial. So how quick is 200Mb and can the rest of us expect it any time soon?

Virgin Media has started trials of a new 200Mb Internet supply in Kent which will provide new insight into how customers would use true ‘wideband’ services.

Thought to be the fastest implementation of its kind in the world, this new speed is four times faster than Virgin’s top home service of 50Mb and has even surpassed Japan’s 160Mb offering. Indeed 200MB is faster than most modern routers can handle so trial participants will have to upgrade their hardware choosing hard-wired devices as opposed to wireless ones, which do not currently run to these speeds.

The company confirms it has been running laboratory simulations for several weeks and that the public testing phase will last for up to 12 months. During the pilot, which is taking place in a select number of Ashford households, the performance of bandwidth-hungry applications such as High Definition video streaming and online 3D computer gaming will be closely monitored.

The promise of such dramatic bandwidth advances is sure to fill UK web surfers with eager anticipation. Indeed, the speed improvement for an average household connection would be like upgrading from the Virgin West Coast train line to the Virgin Galactic space line.

However, Virgin Media has yet to indicate if and when this service will be made available for general release and is stressing that the project taking place in Kent is merely a pilot.
