BT power failure affects broadband users

Reams of BT customers were left disgruntled as the company experienced a power failure that resulted in them suffering substantial periods of downtime on their broadband.

Thousands of BT broadband users suffered connection problems because of a power failure at a major exchange in Birmingham, with up to 5% of all its customers affected.

Many businesses were reduced to a standstill because of the fault with customers from as far afield as London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Cornwall being affected.”

Businesses left twiddling their thumbs

'BT Broadband' became a trending topic on Twitter, as thousands of unhappy customers took to the social networking site to voice their displeasure at the lack of support from the BT customer support line. It is thought that this service was affected by the failure as well.

Many businesses were reduced to a standstill because of the fault, with up to 5% of all its customers affected.

Whilst home customers were no doubt annoyed, a lot of the impact appears to have been on businesses who could ill afford to experience long downtime periods. "Really frustrating for a small business as we are so reliant on the Internet" said Daniel Morris of one London-based company.

"Have you tried switching it off and on again?"

In a statement released to BBC News at the time, BT representatives confirmed that they were doing everything they could to get information to their customers as quickly as possible.

It read: "Our engineers are on-site and the majority of customers' service has already been restored. We are working to restore service to remaining customers as soon as possible this afternoon.

"Should any customers continue to experience difficulty in accessing their broadband service, they are advised to turn their hub or modem off and on again."

Since releasing the statement, sources from BT told The Daily Telegraph that the power failure had been fixed but customers could still experience some connection difficulties in the near future.
