Google Wallet to pocket the cash?

Conveniently leaving your wallet at home might no longer be sufficient excuse not to pay the dinner bill. Thanks to a new Google app, you may soon need to leave your phone behind too.

Google is aiming to revolutionise the way we make cash transactions with Google Wallet, a new smartphone app that allows the user to pay via their phone.

So could this new concept, which is currently only available on the Nexus S 4G Android phone, really catch on? According to the Internet giant, the process could not be simpler. When you arrive at the checkout, simply reach for your smartphone, unlock it, launch the app, enter your PIN code and swipe the phone against the pay point.

The technology employed is known as NFC (near-filed communications) which, having entered and stored your credit or debit information, allows your phone to wirelessly debit the payment from your account.

Safety in numbers

Of course, many have already raised concerns regarding security. Change is often treated with trepidation, and never more so than when it concerns the way personal data is stored and processed. But industry experts have commented that much of the responsibility will lie in the user's own hands.

“It's hard to imagine that all users are going to choose a PIN code for their Google Wallet which is hard to crack.”

Graham Cluley
Security expert

“It's hard to imagine that all users are going to choose a PIN code for their Google Wallet which is hard to crack,” says Graham Cluley, writing for Sophos.com, “let alone different from the one which they should be using to protect all the rest of their smartphone.”

Indeed, with 1234 cited as the password most frequently chosen by users, he may have a point.

Don’t consign your wallet to the recycle bin just yet

Whilst Google might tell you this app is the future consumer payment method of choice, it may be some time before it becomes the accepted norm. At present the Nexus S 4G is the only device to support this app and it may be a while before pay point installation in stores becomes mainstream.

Please let us know what you think. Are you a payment pioneer or are you still resisting the move to Chip and PIN?
