Windows 8: What we know so far

Microsoft's latest operating system (OS) offering Windows 8 has got IT professionals around the globe talking, but what does the industry really know about Windows 8 so far?

Thanks to the drip-feeding of information via the 'Building Microsoft 8' blog, it is clear that Microsoft is building an OS that will be natively optimised for all computing devices.

Rumour has it that Windows 8 will be compatible both ARM and Intel processors, meaning that it will be fit for use of desktops, laptops, mobiles and tablets.

ARM already commands 90 per cent of the processor market; providing its architecture to rival Windows firms such as Apple and its iPhone, suggesting that Microsoft is really gunning for the mainstream with its next OS.

Windows 8 is said to be compatible with either ARM or Intel processors, meaning that it will be fit for use of desktops, laptops, mobiles and tablets.

Its rumoured user interface (UI) also suggests that the Windows 8 experience will be optimised for touch navigation. The Inquirer reveals that a traditional desktop-based environment will be available as well as "a Metro touchscreen user interface for those who want simplicity."

"Beautiful, fast and fluid" interface

Metro is reportedly based on the current mobile iteration of Windows 7 for mobile and will have a "beautiful, fast and fluid" user interface that has "a huge variety of new apps to use", according to Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky.

The "huge variety of new apps" Sinofsky refers to also indicates that Microsoft will attempt to replicate Apple's hugely successful App Store.

Clouds are forecast

Cloud computing is also set to have a big impact on Windows 8 development, as will the full native support to high-speed USB 3.0 data transfer.
