Netbooks resist the rise of the tablet
With so much hype surrounding tablet
devices you might expect a downward trend for other
portable computers. But with netbook sales rising,
perhaps these rivals can co-exist. |

Experts report that
despite the increasing popularity of tablet devices,
netbook computers are "hanging on in there."
According to LaptopShop.co.uk, the rise of tablets
such as the iPad and Samsung Galaxy has not
discouraged netbook manufacturers - whose sales grew
in 2010.
One industry insider, Jeff Orr,
commented on this news, stating: "The hype that
media tablets were displacing portable computers and
dedicated CE device purchases simply didn't become a
reality."

|
Orr also said that despite the upcoming
reductions in the price of tablet devices,
and the inevitable rise in popularity as a
result, netbooks "will not be killed off."
Instead he predicted that the two
technologies would continue to co-exist
happily, remarking: "With increasing choices
for consumers and great opportunities for
business to consider ultra-mobile devices,
we expect multiple device categories to
benefit in the near term." |

Sales of iPad 2 lower than forecast
Orr’s comments on Silicon.com came shortly
after Apple posted less-than-satisfactory
sales results for its newly-released iPad 2.
Although 4.69 million units were sold
during the first quarter of the year, these
figures were short of what the manufacturing
giant had expected. It argued that
"manufacturing constraints" were to blame
for the lower statistics, not a decrease in
popularity.
