iPad 2 launched to rave reviews

After months of anticipation, Apple's newest iPad model has been unveiled, and some reviewers have given their take on the much-hyped offering. So what are its key features?

As the new iPad 2 was being launched in the States in early March 2011, IT experts in the UK who had managed to get hold of sample models were commenting on its new features.

Thinner, lighter and with HDMI output

Early indications have suggested that the iPad 2 is much more lightweight, which is in line with Apple's claims that the upgraded model was 33 per cent thinner - coming in a sleek 8.8 millimetres, and weighing just 613 grams.

Alan Lu at IT Pro provided his expert opinion, claiming the changes were immediately obvious: "The reduced thickness is immediately noticeable when held in the hand and makes the original feel like a slab."

"It's still made out of aluminium, so it feels just as rigid and sturdy as the first iPad," he added, also claiming that those using the device for business purposes - such as to give presentations - would "appreciate the optional HDMI adapter which plugs into the iPad 2's dock connector."

"Make no mistake, this is a seriously cool piece of kit."

Patrick Goss
IT Specialist

One other IT specialist, Patrick Goss, gave his take on Apple's long-awaited model, boldly stating: "Make no mistake, this is a seriously cool piece of kit, bringing a whole host of improvements that together take the iPad onto a whole new plane."

"People who suggest this is an incremental upgrade are simply not looking at the bigger picture; the Apple iPad 2 feels and acts drastically different from its predecessor. The iPad 2 is nicer to hold, use and look at," he added on Tech Radar.

Time for your tablet?

Brits who are excited by the reviews and planning to invest will have to wait, as the earliest date the iPad 2 could go on sale in the UK - hosted by the Orange UK network - is March 25th, although it could be much later.

Steve Jobs certainly seemed acutely aware of an increased demand for tablets as he said 2011 threatened to be 'the year of the copycat'. He warned against some of Apple's rivals rushing out devices that could not compare to the iPad with a sideswipe at Google's latest version of Android for tablets. "Has anyone got around to making apps for it yet?" he asked.
