Most anticipated gadgets of 2011

Following the ‘top 10 Christmas gadget’ article, which featured in our December newsletter, we felt the natural sequel would be ‘the most anticipated gadgets of 2011’.

The New Year promises to bring many new IT developments, particularly in the field of mobile computing, and those techies at Computer World have been listing the innovations they expect to make the biggest splash.

So look out for the following breakthroughs and new releases as the year unfolds. Only time will tell the hits and misses of 2011.

TV goes Google-eyed

First up is the one everyone is talking about - Google TV. The Internet giant is promising to link directly through to your TV set, so you can browse the web from the comfort of your favourite armchair. Will they deliver where others have failed? Either way, it’s only a matter of time.

Gamers on the move

There are new gadgets for gamers on the move too. The Sony Ericsson ZEUS Z1 PlayStation Phone promises to be the perfect combination of Sony’s iconic games console with the latest Android phone technology and, following the success of the Gameboy and the Wii, Nintendo predicts another ground-breaking console with the Nintendo 3DS - that’s 3D gaming without the silly glasses.

•  PlayStation Phone

•  Nintendo 3DS

•  LG Star

•  RIM Playbook

•  Google Nexus S

•  Chrome OS Netbook

•  iPad 2

•  iPhone 5

•  Palm Pre 2

Faster Android devices

Faster mobile devices are a definite theme for the year. The LG Star is more than just another Android phone - it’s twice as fast as the iPhone with an 8-megapixel camera and can record video at full HD 1080p. The Google Nexus S is due out early this year too. It comes pre-installed with the best of Google apps and is enabled with new features like true multi-tasking, Wi-Fi hotspot and Internet Calling.

Pretenders to the iPad throne

Devices promising to challenge the newly launched Apple tablet this year include the RIM Playbook and the Chrome OS Netbook. The former has a 7-inch, 1024 x 600, capacitive multitouch display, a Cortex A9-based, dual-core 1GHz CPU, 1GB of RAM, and a 3 megapixel front-facing camera along with a 5 megapixel rear lens. The latter boots in just 10 seconds and allows documents and settings to be stored in the cloud.

But let’s not forget the iPad itself, for Apple will surely have an updated version on offer some time this year. Computer Weekly reports rumours that a new model may include a front and back-facing camera, USB ports, SD card slots, HDMI out, 1080P playback and full GPS.

Faster smartphones

Staying with Apple, 2011 is likely to see a new iPhone release (the iPhone 5, we presume) especially given the rapid evolution of Android phones. The Palm Pre 2 is the final gadget on the watch list. When HP bought Palm they had the intention of just using the OS for tablets, but fast forward a few months and the temptation has become too great as the Palm Pre 2 is set for launch. The device comes equipped with a 1GHz processor that powers the new webOS 2.0, 5MP camera, QWERTY keyboard, 3.1" touch display and 16GB of memory.
