Hackers target Twitter update

Look out for yet another scam this month from hackers spreading malicious software. Twitter users are being warned about links claiming to be software updates for the TweetDeck browser.

TweetDeck users have been warned not to click on links that claim to be an update because some have been discovered to be Trojan viruses. As reported by V3, scammers have chosen to target the site as it's undergoing a major overhaul that will update Twitter itself.

"We are seeing a number of updates on Twitter urging users to download a file called 'tweetdeck-08032010-update.exe' from a URL beginning with http://alturl.com/," warned a member of the TweetDeck team. "These tweets are from hacked accounts and this file does not come from us."

As reported by IDG News, the software is a generic Trojan horse programme that most antivirus products don't detect. The software downloads a variety of different malicious programmes such as password-stealing keyloggers.

Whilst TweetDeck users will have to update the software as a result of the Twitter overhaul, people are being advised to visit the TweetDeck website to ensure the version they are downloading is genuine and virus-free.

Malicious software threatens data theft and loss of reputation

The scammers are using topics such as the Emmy's to make their tweets visible in search results, in the hope that they can trick people into downloading the malicious software.

The security of social networking is something businesses need to keep a close eye on. Earlier this year the FTC said that hackers were able to hack into accounts and publish fake tweets, which could be seriously damaging to the perception of a brand. Furthermore, exposing business computers to malicious software could mean key business data is lost or corrupted, sensitive files can be stolen and a whole network can be infected.
