Larger PC manufacturers have been claiming
for some time that they would provide XP
downgrades on new computers beyond the 31st
January deadline. In June this year, HP was
talking of a July 2009 cut-off, which it has
now been officially accorded. However
Microsoft has decreed that smaller companies
assembling their own PCs ("system builders")
will not be allowed to purchase Windows XP
licences for installation after the end of
January 2009. |
A Microsoft spokesman commented:
"As more customers make the move to Windows Vista, we want
to make sure that they are making that transition with
confidence and that it is as smooth as possible. Providing
downgrade media
for a few more months is part of that
commitment.” |
