Windows XP thrown yet another lifeline

Microsoft just can not seem to rid itself of Windows XP. In October 2008, a leaked email revealed that the scheduled death of Vista’s predecessor was to be postponed by a further six months until 31st July 2009.

Officially removed from sale on 30th June this year, Windows XP is still readily available on new PCs by way of a “backgrade option”, which is included with Windows Vista Business or Vista Ultimate licences. Today many corporate customers are continuing to resist the move to Vista with one out of every three new PCs currently being sold making use of this right to backgrade.

However, until Microsoft’s latest announcement, the facility was due to be withdrawn on 31st January 2009. Now the software giant has confirmed it will continue to supply installation CDs for XP until 31st July 2009 allowing resellers wishing to backgrade their clients’ PCs to do so until that date.

Larger PC manufacturers have been claiming for some time that they would provide XP downgrades on new computers beyond the 31st January deadline. In June this year, HP was talking of a July 2009 cut-off, which it has now been officially accorded. However Microsoft has decreed that smaller companies assembling their own PCs ("system builders") will not be allowed to purchase Windows XP licences for installation after the end of January 2009.

A Microsoft spokesman commented:

"As more customers make the move to Windows Vista, we want to make sure that they are making that transition with confidence and that it is as smooth as possible. Providing downgrade media
for a few more months is part of that commitment.”

Since downgrade rights do not expire, it is likely that Windows XP will continue to be widely available even beyond this latest extension - only time will tell for how long. Maybe until the release of Windows 7, the cynics might say.
