Geoff’s Rants and Raves – Fibre Broadband

At the Office we now have two Fibre Broadband connections; one BT Infinity for Business and one Zen Fibre Office. All I can say is wow! We used to have a couple of very good ADSLs running at 6 to 8Mb/s but look below for what we get for just a few pounds more –

Geoff’s Rants and Raves – Netbooks

Welcome to the start of Geoff’s Rants  and Raves articles, I will regularly bring you information on items that have made me happy or have made my blood boil.

First up for a jolly good RANT are Netbooks. These devices infuriate me immensely. The Intel Atom processor has not got enough grunt to pull the skin off a rice pudding. They seem to always ship with 1GB RAM which occupies the only RAM socket so to upgrade you have to remove the 1GB and replace with a 2GB. They have tiny screens, keyboards and trackpads. They cost around £240 to £320 (plus of course the extra RAM you will need to buy). So (in my personal opinion) they are underpowered, frustrating to use and not in the slightest good value for money.

Samsung Note – Mobile Phone Review

Until recently I’ve been using the Motorola Milestone (or Droid); an Android based phone but one which is a couple of years old now. The main reason for choosing the Milestone was the slide out keyboard which was big enough to use, but which didn’t impinge on the screen area available.

With the Note, Samsung have taken a different direction – make the screen really big! The 1280×700 5.3″ AMOLED screen is glorious. More a smallish tablet than a phone, it does look pretty ridiculous held to your ear; but it works well with a Bluetooth earpiece or using the built in speakerphone.
